IMDG exemption certificate becomes mandatory

| Theme: , ,

Since the adoption of Amendment 42-24 of the IMDG Code, the IMDG exemption certificate now plays an essential role in the maritime transport of dangerous goods. This regulatory development introduces new responsibilities for shippers, manufacturers, and carriers. They must now demonstrate the compliance of any product or device benefiting from a special exemption provision.

A strengthened regulatory framework for the IMDG exemption certificate

Before this update, presenting an exemption certificate was not mandatory. Amendment 42-24 changes this rule and requires the document as of January 1st, 2026. Every exempted product must be accompanied by this certificate when shipped. The certificate details compliance point by point, based on SOLAS Regulation VI/2. It also helps ensure the safety and proper stowage of cargo.

The Code does not impose a specific format, but the signatory must prove the robustness of the file. This includes providing attestations, reports, or safety data sheets. Such credibility is essential for transport acceptance and for insurance coverage in case of an incident.

In this context, shippers must ensure that all technical information is available before shipping. This preparation allows them to compile a complete file, avoid documentary delays, and streamline the logistics process.
