GLOBAL MARITIME TRANSPORT UNDER TENSION
International logistics chains continue to suffer the consequences of a particularly unstable geopolitical context. Between persistent tensions in the Middle East, the lasting reduction of crossings through the Suez Canal, and the growing difficulties encountered at the Panama Canal, global maritime flows are reorganizing.
A LOGISTICS RESILIENCE PUT TO THE TEST
The conflict in the Middle East accentuates disruptions on strategic maritime routes. The decline in transits via the Strait of Hormuz and the Suez Canal is pushing shipping companies to develop alternative solutions, notably through multimodal schemes and the use of secondary ports (see our article: Middle East: Regional tensions and impacts on international logistics).
At the same time, the Panama Canal is facing a resurgence of congestion. US energy exports to Asia, stimulated by tensions on global oil markets, are leading to a significant increase in transits and waiting times. Auctions to obtain transit slots are now reaching record levels, while maintenance work and the risks related to the return of the El Niño phenomenon could further deteriorate the situation in the coming months.
REORGANIZATION OF SERVICES AND ADAPTATION OF COMPANIES
In the face of these constraints, the major shipowners are reorganizing their rotations and adjusting their services. Several companies, including MSC, Hapag-Lloyd, CMA CGM, or ONE, have proceeded with blank sailings in order to limit the impact of the congestion observed in major hubs such as Qingdao, Nansha, or Port Klang.
In parallel, we are seeing service adjustments, such as Premier Alliance suspending its direct service between Europe and Japan. Being the last alliance to offer this solution, it is now necessary to rely on transshipment options. Conversely, new services are emerging, such as the company NEOLINE. The sail-powered shipowner offers to reach the cities of Montreal and Toronto in Canada, thanks to a rail connection operated by the Canadian National Railway from the port of Halifax.
