SPECIFIC TRANSPORT: HAVE YOU CONSIDERED RoRo?

| Theme: ,

A maritime transport mode designed for the loading and unloading of rolling cargo, RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) transport is widely used in international logistics for its efficiency and controlled costs.

WHAT IS RORO?

This mode of maritime transport, used in ships equipped with mobile access ramps, allows goods to be loaded and unloaded (by rolling) inside the ships. This enables fast and secure handling, unlike LoLo (Lift-on/Lift-off) transport, which requires cranes to lift the goods.

ADVANTAGES OF RORO TRANSPORT

RoRo transport has many advantages:

  • Time efficiency during loading/unloading: Handling is minimized since no cranes are required. Deliveries can often be made directly to the customer’s site.
  • Reduced logistics costs: Less labor and lifting equipment are needed, and there is a lower risk of cargo damage.
  • Ideal for complete vehicles or large rolling equipment: Some RoRo vessels can even carry non-motorized trailers, towed by port tractors.

In addition, some next-generation RoRo vessels are now wind-powered, helping to reduce CO₂ emissions and support sustainable shipping (see our article WIND-POWERED SHIPPING IS SETTING SAIL).

At Balguerie, our experts offer regular RoRo shipments on multiple routes — from southern France to Africa and Eastern Europe, and from Northern Europe to the USA and Asia. Contact our teams to learn more.
